Computer software installation and management

Overview
  • 240h Duration

Software installation is the process of preparing a program for use by copying files and configuring settings, while management involves the entire lifecycle of software, including installation, updating, and removal. Management ensures users have necessary software, that it's up-to-date for security and functionality, and that unnecessary programs are removed.

Software installation
  • What it is:
The process of making a computer program ready to run. It involves copying program files to the computer, creating shortcuts, configuring settings, and registering the software with the operating system.

  • Key steps:
    1. Obtain the software, usually as a downloadable file (e.g., an .exe file for Windows).

  • Run the installer file, which can be an "attended" (requiring user input) or "unattended" (automated) process.

  • Follow the on-screen instructions, which may involve accepting license agreements or choosing installation options.

  • The installer copies files to the correct directories and configures the system.

  • Once complete, the software is ready to be launched.

Software management
  • What it is:
A continuous process that encompasses installation, updating, and removal of software.

  • Key aspects:
    • Installation: Ensuring the right software is installed for users' needs, often requiring administrative rights in a business setting.

  • Updates: Regularly updating software is critical for fixing bugs, patching security vulnerabilities, and getting new features.

  • Removal: Removing software that is no longer needed to free up resources and maintain a clean system.

  • Compliance: Managing software to ensure all licenses are used properly and the necessary applications are available.

  • Testing: New software should be tested before being widely deployed across an organization.

Security: Sourcing software from reputable vendors and keeping it updated is a key security practice.
