Cloud infrastructure is the combination of hardware and software resources that form the foundation of cloud computing. These components—like servers, storage, networking equipment, and virtualization software—are located in a cloud service provider's data centers and are delivered to customers over the internet. Instead of buying and maintaining their own physical infrastructure, businesses can rent these resources on-demand.
Cloud services are the various products and applications built on top of cloud infrastructure. They're what customers actually use, from a simple email service to a complex database. These services are delivered over the internet and are often billed on a pay-as-you-go model.
Cloud Infrastructure: The Building Blocks 🏗️
Think of cloud infrastructure as the plumbing and electrical wiring of a building. It's the underlying framework that allows everything to function. The key components include:
Servers: Powerful computers that provide the computational power for cloud services. Cloud providers use virtualization to run multiple virtual servers (or virtual machines) on a single physical server, maximizing resource utilization.
Storage: A system for storing data on remote servers. It can be accessed from any device with an internet connection. There are different types of storage for different needs, like object storage for large files and block storage for high-performance applications.
Networking: The equipment and software (like routers, switches, and load balancers) that ensure seamless data transfer and connectivity between cloud resources and users.
Virtualization: The core technology that separates resources from the physical hardware. It allows providers to create isolated, virtual environments that can be allocated and scaled quickly for different customers.
